Welcome to my first-ever blog post! Woohoo! Below is my entry for the Spring Fling Kidlit Contest 2021 hosted by Ciara O'Neal and Kaitlyn Sanchez. Happy Spring!

HAROLD (wc 139)

Harold was a hugger –

though the other trees were not.

He’d sway their way on a breezy day

because, sometimes, Harold forgot.

“Move back!” one tree shouted.

“Don’t touch!” another said.

And with all his might, Harold held on tight,

to hug himself instead.

“Crown shyness,” the big birch called it,

“we stay separate to let in the light.”

So, Harold grew blue and inward he drew,

from summer to winter’s long night.

Then when bloomed the bright buds of spring,

a soft chirp chirp came anew.

And in a branch knot, a robin sat like a dot

in a nest over one egg – no, two!

“Your branches hug nicely,” the robin began,

“yes, you are the home that I’ve sought.”

And Harold unfurled to share his light with the world,

because, well, Harold liked hugs a whole lot.
